From the Big Bend to the Big Thicket, from the High Plains to the Rio Grande Valley, Texas is a dynamic and biodiverse landscape with significant conservation needs. Fortunately Audubon organizations also span the state. Audubon is committed to large scale conservation in the vast prairies and grasslands, the Texas Coast, and growing urban landscapes.
PRAIRIES & GRASSLANDS
- Over 60% of Texas is grassland or prairie, including the most endangered ecosystem in North America – Blackland Prairie.
- Audubon Texas is working to pilot the promotion of land use that is both financially viable and sustainable, like bird-friendly, grass-fed beef.
- Local Audubon chapters help preserve and restore native habitat.
TEXAS COAST
- The coast represents critical bird habitat (Important Bird Areas) and is the seasonal home to over 98% of long-distance migratory birds in North America.
- Audubon Texas manages 178 islands, stretching across 70% of the coast.
- Local chapters along the coast monitor, protect and restore coastal bird habitat.
URBAN LANDSCAPES
- Texas is home to seven of the 15 fastest growing cities in the U.S., which puts significant pressure on our environment.
- Audubon’s Urban Conservation Program engages municipalities, local governments, and urban residents in conservation planning.
- Urban areas are hubs for chapter activities, conservation work, and public education.
